After having paid a whopping $2000 for her dog’s veterinarian care, Melanie Griffin from Lansing Michigan decided to look into dog health insurance. Her veterinarian even suggested it.

Her task was not easy. Atlthough not new in the USA, Pet and Dog health insurance is only gaining popularity in the new millenium. With veterinarian costs rising, and pets having the luxuryGirl and golden retriever outdoor of XRays, MRI’s, CAT Scans and other pricey procedures, the cost of treating a pet have been going up and up.

There are many policies to choose from. Depending on the coverage you choose, you may get accident only pet insurance (this is fine for house cats), health care pet insurance which may or may not include routine care.

Don’t settle for the first company you see because you might regret it.
Carefully read policies – Read the clauses on deductibles, co-pays, coverage limits, and exclusions before you buy a pet insurance policy. Pre-existing problems and hereditary conditions such as dysphasia in certain dog breeds, such as German shepherds and retrievers, are normally excluded.

Figure out your budget. The age and breed of your dog will affect the premium. The older your pet is, the higher the premium you will pay.

Find out the deductibles and co-pays before you sign up. Many people are surprised when they don’t get reimbursed for the entire vet bill.

Make sure you know what’s covered and what’s not covered.

Some companies even have limits for vet office visits even if it is not routine care. In face some insurance companies will only reimburse ” allowable” veterinary expenses. In other words, they set the price.
